Fire & Emergency Situations
- Get out and stay out - exit the fire area/building immediately, close doors behind you, and let people know there is danger by shouting “FIRE" upon exiting.
- Call 9-1-1 from a safe location.
- Establish an accountability (i.e. number of people who may still be in the area/building) and be prepared to provide information to the first emergency service that arrives (i.e. Fire, Paramedic services, or Police)
- Assist Emergency Services by staying back out of harm's way. Emergency services need room to work - move vehicles off roadways and ensure all people stay away and clear.
- Wait for emergency services to indicate the fire area/building is safe (i.e. “all clear") to re-enter before considering re-entry for any purpose.
Practicing your home escape and evacuation plans better prepares you for emergencies. Please keep these 4 key life-saving tactics in mind:
- LOOK for potential fire hazards around your home and take action to prevent fire from starting.
- LISTEN for smoke alarms in an emergency. Make sure everyone knows the sound of smoke alarms and can hear them in an emergency. There is no time to spare in a fire - early detection gives you the extra seconds you need to get out safely.
- LEARN two ways out of every room in your home. Practice an escape plan with everyone in your home before a fire starts so you and your family can get out quickly.
- GET OUT & STAY OUT - when smoke alarms sound in an emergency, get out immediately and call 9-1-1 from outside. Never re-enter a burning building.
Are You Prepared for Emergencies?

Grown-Ups - Children don't always awake when the smoke alarm sounds. Know what your child will do before a fire occurs.
