Public Skating Information

General Ice Time Rules

  • Each participant acknowledges the inherent risks associated with on-ice activities and shall participate at their own risk.
  • The Ontario Recreation Facilities Association and the Township of Oro-Medonte strongly recommends at minimum that a CSA approved helmet be worn by all participants, and gloves protection is encouraged. Additional equipment is recommended if playing hockey (see shinny requirements).
  • Participants are not permitted on the ice until the ice-resurfacer door is closed.
  • When the buzzer sounds, all participants must leave the ice surface immediately.
  • No food allowed on the players’ benches or the ice surface.
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption in the facility is strictly prohibited.
  • Any abusive behaviour, incidents, accidents and/or emergency situations must be reported to a staff member immediately.
  • Absolutely no fighting or use of coarse language is allowed.

Rules

  • The Ontario Recreation Facilities Association and the Township of Oro-Medonte strongly recommends all participants, especially children and new skaters, wear a CSA approved helmet, and glove protection is encouraged.
  • Only participants wearing skates, or using a sledge are permitted on the ice. No other footwear shall be permitted on the ice.
  • Participants are not permitted on the ice until the ice-resurfacer door is closed.
  • Everyone must skate in the same direction. Public Skates may include a change in skating direction midway through the program. Staff will alert patrons of the change in direction by sounding the buzzer.
  • No hockey pucks, sticks, balls, chairs, or baby carriers/strollers are allowed on the ice surface.
  • No food or beverages allowed on the ice surface.
  • Skate blades must stay at ice level. No backwards skating, hockey drills, figure skating jumps, carrying of children, racing, or playing of tag allowed.
  • Any horseplay, including play fighting, or deliberate interference of other skaters may result in patrons being asked to leave the ice.
  • The center of the ice will be reserved as a learn to skate zone. This area is reserved for those learning to skate, or with young children. The area should not be used to practice advanced skills.
  • Designated dressing rooms, or the lobby are available for use during public skating times. Please refer to the electronic dressing room allocation board for which rooms to use.
  • It is recommended that parents/guardians of children 12 years and under remain on-site and do not leave children unattended.
  • Staff are on-site to enforce these rules to ensure a safe skating environment for all patrons. Staff have the authority to remove from the facility any person(s) not abiding by these rules.

This is a FREE activity that does not require pre-registration.​

Rules

  • This program is for parents/guardians and children to leisure skate, and for newer skaters to practice skating.
  • Guests 9 years of age and under must be accompanied by a guardian who is a minimum of 12 years of age and older. 
  • Parents/Guardians must accompany children on the ice. Limit of 3 children maximum per parent/guardian on the ice.
  • This is a leisure skate only. For safety reasons, no hockey equipment or shinny games are permitted on the ice.
  • The Ontario Recreation Facilities Association and the Township of Oro-Medonte strongly recommends all participants, especially children and new skaters, wear a CSA approved helmet, and glove protection is encouraged.
  • All persons on the ice must be wearing skates. No other footwear shall be permitted on the ice. Sledges are allowed.
  • Participants will skate in the same direction as other skaters.
  • Only official skate aids are allowed on the ice surface.
  • The following are not permittedon the ice:
  • Carrying children in arms 
  • Baby carriers and strollers
  • Chairs                                         
  • Food and drink                                               
  • Sport sticks/pucks/toboggans and other items which might interfere with the safety of other skaters.
  • Figure skating maneuvers such as jumps and spins.
  • Rough play such as tag, racing and games

  • Senior Skates are for leisure skating only. There is to be no hockey equipment or activity on the ice during this time.
  • Please note that these skaters are not monitored by on-ice staff.
  • If patrons require assistance during the skate, please speak with staff onsite.

Rules

  • Family Shinny is an opportunity for families (children ages 4 to 12 and supervising adults) to practice basic hockey skills and engage in small half ice or quarter ice cooperative shinny game play.
  • No more than half of the ice is to be used for shinny to allow for other skaters to develop their hockey skills.
  • Children will be required to have an accompanying adult on ice with them. Adults can supervise a maximum of 3 children. Supervising adults must be accompanied by a child ages 4 to 12 years.
  • All participants playing hockey are strongly recommended to wear full CSA approved ice hockey equipment. Full Hockey equipment includes neck guard, mouth guard, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, jock/jill, hockey pants, shin pads, hockey jersey, hockey socks, CSA-approved hockey helmet with a cage, hockey skates, and hockey stick. At minimum, participants are required to wear a CSA-approved helmet, gloves, neck guard and for those participants playing goalie, it is recommended that they wear appropriate goalie protection (jock/jill, pads, gloves, etc.)
  • Full equipment is strongly recommended for supervising adults, however at minimum it is mandatory that all adults wear a CSA approved helmet and glove protection while on the ice surface.
  • Family Shinny hockey has a strict no contact This is a non-competitive hockey program.

Outdoor Rink Lighting

Outdoor rinks with access to lights (see above), are equipped with a light access timer box. The light access timer boxes will be powered on at 5:00PM, which will give users access to turn the light timer on for the required time. Please note, that all lights will automatically power off at 11:00PM. 

Outdoor Rink Volunteers are Needed!

Join our team of volunteers that ensure our community benefits from quality Outdoor Rinks with winter!

This opportunity will provide you the opportunity to:

  1. Give our kids and the community a place to get outside and play.
  2. Earn required high school volunteer hours (high school students).
  3. Contribute to the strong sense of community in your neighbourhood.

The Township will provide the required training and equipment. For more information, or to volunteer please email Jodi Grubb at jgrubb@oro-medonte.ca.

Position includes but is not limited to:

  • Volunteers will attend a short but MANDATORY training/orientation sessions to outdoor rink volunteers (details to be determined).
  • Maintaining the ice surface by scraping and flooding.
  • Keeping the ice clean of ice cuttings, slush, and snow.
  • Report maintenance concerns and safety hazards immediately to the Operations and Community Services team.
  • No objects such as nets, boards or lights shall be installed in park or ice surface without prior consultation and written permission obtained through the Operations and Community Services Department.  Any authorized equipment is to be removed no later than 2 weeks after rink closure.
  • Hockey nets are the sole responsibility of the Neighbourhood Group/Volunteers. Nets must meet all Operations and Community Services specifications and safety standards. Nets must be cared for and stored by the Neighbourhood Group/Volunteers.  The Group must advise the Operations and Community Services department when they purchase or construct a new net, as well as when they are placed on the rink.
  • Post rink schedule showing appropriate skating times for hockey and pleasure skating if deemed appropriate.
  • All replacement locks or tools will be paid by the Neighbourhood Group/Volunteers.

All hoses and materials are to be stored neatly in the rink boxes/sheds if provided.
