Strong Mayor Powers

The Province of Ontario’s Strong Mayor Powers legislation (Municipal Act, 2001 as amended Part VI.1: Special Powers and Duties of the Head of Council) now includes the Township of Oro-Medonte effective May 1, 2025. It is important to note that under Strong Mayor Powers, Ontario Mayors who have been extended these powers are not able to decline any of the powers/tools.

To ensure consistent delineation between governance and Township operations, Mayor Greenlaw delegated the following authority to Oro-Medonte Council and the Chief Administrative Officer respectively (refer to executed Mayoral decision in accordion below):

Delegation to Oro-Medonte Council

  • Appoint the Township’s Chief Administrative Officer
  • Create committees of Council, assign their functions, and appoint the Chairs and Vice-chairs of committees of Council

Delegation to Chief Administrative Officer

  • Determine the organizational structure
  • Hire, dismiss or exercise any other prescribed employment powers with respect to any division head or the head of any other part of the organizational structure
