In 2012, the Township of Oro-Medonte partnered with Tourism Simcoe County and the Barrie Cycling Club

Road Cycling to develop a cycling strategy for Oro-Medonte. Cycle Simcoe was launched as a pilot project in the Township with the goal of developing safe, accessible, and fun cycling routes for tourists and locals alike.

Four routes were developed, including the easy, family-friendly Lake Country Oro-Medonte Rail Trail, as well as three road cycling loops, the most advanced of which would give even the most experienced of a true challenge. The routes were then signed and a public safety campaign was launched, encouraging motorists and cyclists to practice courtesy and share the road.

But it didn’t stop at mapping and safety education. In partnership with Ontario by Bike, Cycle Simcoe worked with local businesses to offer extended services specific to cyclists’ needs, including the Simcoe Huronia Bed & Breakfast Cycle Tour that allows cyclists to explore a number of municipalities by bike while their luggage is delivered to their next B&B stop. Dozens of businesses throughout Simcoe County have been certified as “cycling friendly” by Ontario by Bike.Rail Trail Cycling

The success of the pilot project in Oro-Medonte has allowed Cycle Simcoe to expand its reach across the county, with routes available to cyclists of all ages and abilities throughout Ontario’s Lake Country, the Heart of Georgian Bay, and South Georgian Bay regions.
