Streetlights

There are currently over 1,100 streetlights located in the Township of Oro-Medonte, with over 900 owned and operated by the Municipality. The remaining 200 streetlights located across the Township are owned and operated by others including the Province of Ontario, the County of Simcoe, developers (yet to be assumed) or privately owned lights for individual properties.

Approximately 95% of Oro-Medonte Municipal streetlights are located in 37 urbanized areas (i.e., lands that are located within a Registered Plan of Subdivision and/or identified settlement area).

In these urbanized areas and in accordance with Taxation By-law (No. 2022-066), benefitting landowners are currently assessed a flat rate charge of $57 per year for the operation and maintenance of streetlights. The remaining Municipal streetlights located across the Township are considered a benefit to the public at large and financed through the general tax levy.

To ensure fair and consistent application of streetlight charges the Taxation By-law is updated annually to account for the Municipal assumption of new subdivision underground infrastructure and the results of internal auditing of land records and streetlight accounts.

 The Township of Oro-Medonte has been proactive with respect to energy management and conservation activities.  In 2016, 2017 & 2018, the Township converted existing streetlights to LED lights (light emitting diodes). The approximate cost savings in energy consumption for converting to LED fixtures is estimated over 60%.
