Source Protection Plans under the Clean Water Act are in place to protect municipal drinking water sources from possible contamination. The Clean Water Act is one of the Province's responses to the Walkerton water contamination tragedy and is part of Ontario's strategy to safeguard drinking water from source to tap.
The Township's drinking water supplies are most vulnerable in the areas surrounding the municipal drinking water wells. These areas are known as Wellhead Protection Areas. Signs are posted across the County and the Township indicating Drinking Water Protection Zones.
If your property or business is located in a Wellhead Protection Area then you have a greater role to play in protecting municipal drinking water. That is because contaminants will have a greater and more immediate impact on municipal drinking water.
The Severn Sound Environmental Association (SSEA) provides services to the Township as a Risk Management Official and Risk Management Inspector under the Clean Water Act, 2006 Part IV.
General questions regarding the protection of municipal drinking water sources should be directed to Environmental Services; while questions regarding the incorporation of policies within the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan (LSPP) and Source Water Protection Plan into the Township's Official Plan should be directed to Development Services.
