About the Parks and Recreation Master Plan

Project Purpose

The Corporation of the Township Oro-Medonte (Township) is developing a Parks and Recreation Master Plan (Master Plan) that will determine how to best meet community needs for parks, recreation and related activities (arts, culture and leisure) now and in the future. In addition to this overarching objective, the project will also:

  • Identify potential capital project priorities
  • Optimize service delivery (operations, partnerships, funding allocations, etc.)
  • Guide asset management practices
  • Provide Council and administration with a point of reference that can help inform decision making and ensure these decisions are data driven and transparent

Engagement Objectives

Engagement is a vital aspect of the project and critical to helping achieve the aforementioned project purpose. The engagement process will be focused around exploring the following key topics:

  • Parks and recreation activity characteristics (including: levels of use, locations of use, motivators of participation)
  • Barriers to parks and recreation activities
  • Perceived strengths and gaps within the service area
  • Trends, changes and evolutions
  • Future infrastructure and programming needs and priorities

The above engagement insights and other non-engagement research and analysis conducted by the project team will be translated into the strategic directions (recommended priorities and focus areas) contained in the Final Master Plan.

The Project Team's Engagement Commitment

The project team commits to an engagement process that is:

  • Respectful
  • Honest
  • Transparent
  • Inclusive
  • Adaptable

The Image reads, "Respectful, Transparent, Adaptable, Honest, and Inclusive"Furthermore, we commit to ensuring that the public and stakeholders are engaged at multiple points in the project process and are able to see how the collective engagement findings informed the Master Plan.

Parks and Recreation Master Plan FAQ

What is the purpose of the Master Plan?

The Master Plan will provide staff and Council with a strategic plan that will guide future actions and how to best meet community needs for parks, recreation and related activities (arts, culture and leisure) now and in the future.

How will I be able to provide input?

A Resident Survey is being fielded this fall to all households in the Township. Please keep an eye out for a postcard in your mailbox that will have instructions on how to complete the survey (it is scheduled to arrive in early October). If for some reason you do not receive a postcard or misplace it, please review the option above to complete a coded or non-coded survey. There are also a number of other engagement opportunities:

  • Sounding boards (big panels with space to write on) will be set-up in parks and other spaces throughout the Township

  • Online mapping tool – please visit the project website to provide your feedback on specific spaces using the mapping tool (similar to a Google map but with the ability to “pin" and provide comment on specific parks, trails, and other recreation spaces)

How will community input shape the Master Plan?

It is really important that we hear from residents throughout the Township. The feedback we get from residents, community groups, and other parks and recreation stakeholders will give the project team important insights into strengths, needs, gaps and opportunities. These insights and other research and analysis being conducted (review of current assets, population and demographics, trends research) will help the project team identify future priorities and focus areas.

When will the Master Plan be completed?

The Master Plan is scheduled for completion in early 2022.

Will the public have a chance to view the draft Master Plan?

Yes. Before the Master Plan is finalized the public and stakeholders will have a chance to review and provide feedback on the draft Master Plan (likely in late 2021 or early 2022). Given the evolving situation with COVID-19 we aren't sure if this review opportunity will occur in-person or virtually. Once the draft master plan is completed, it can be viewed on the righthand side of this webpage.

Who is developing the Master Plan?

The Township has retained a consulting team led by RC Strategies, a parks and recreation specialist planning firm. Township staff will work closely with the consulting team on all aspects of the project.
